An agreement between Yahoo and Bing will see Yahoo’s web-search replaced with results powered by Bing’s technology.

One of the things I have used of Yahoo’s was their backlink analysis tool which was used to give me a quick idea of what competition I was up against for keywords. Since the loss of this tool might be something we see in the near future I started searching for a new way of finding backlinking information. That is when I stumbled on to SEOmoz and their Open Site Explorer. Its free to use and no registration is required.

Open Site Explorer

To view the image above larger please click on it. Here you will see an example of two of the most popular social networking sites facebook and myspace. I pitted them against each other to give you the best idea of what this site is capable of. For more piratical use you would type in your own url and one your and trying to beat out for a keyword to get an idea of the authority of the site and the number of backlinks pointing to it. This gives you a good sense how long and the amount of work required to beat that site out.

This main page will show you a number of things which are…

Page Authority – Based off of SEOMoz best guess its a combination of algorithms to detect what the overall authority the particular page holds.
Domain Authority – Based off of SEOMoz best guess its a combination of algorithms to detect what the overall authority the particular domain holds.
Total Links –  Combines your nofollow and followed links (nofollow links are links found with the nofollow tag attached to them such as commenting on other blogs)
External, Followed Links –  Number of links coming in that are followed. These links hold a lot of weight in terms of SEO.
Linking Root Domains – Number of domains pointing a link to your site.

Below this will be a list of the sites linking back to the page starting with the highest page authority. This is very useful when it comes to finding what sites are linking to your competitors sites. Often you can visit these pages and have them link to your site as well.

Next I want to go into single page look up. I use this for my own blog to check up on it and get a detailed report on whats going on.

You will get a tab list across the top – Linking Pages, Top Pages, Linking Domains, Anchor Text Distribution and Full List of Link Metrics. The one I will  go over is the Full List of Link metrics.  One thing I always disliked about SEO is www.seansupplee.com and seansupplee.com in the search engines eyes are two different sites. This tool allows you to see what one is currently getting the most backlinking juice and what road you should take with your blog. It also reviews the core features of your backlinks allowing you to see your nofollow to followed link make up. It also reviews your internal link structure and external for followed links only.

Remember to use SEOMoz Open Site Explorer for quickly finding out what keywords you and rank for by looking up your sites you are in competition with.

Hi Sean, I just found out that SEOMoz has an extension for Chrome so I started using that quite a bit. It give you a toolbar with a link to the Open Site explorer. I have a question. Do you know what the highest Page Authority rank is? One blogger mentioned the scale is one to ten then another one said that it goes up to one hundred. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

    Hi Ileane,
The SEOMoz extension works well giving you an overview of all the stats for your site. The SEOMoz authority is based out of 100 while the Google page rank is based out of 10.
