When I first started to create my email list a few years ago the one thing I did was be over protective of it. This hindered me from expanding my list into other markets and tapping into others lists. The practice of email swapping allows you to email your list about others products and in exchange they email their list about your product.

Be sure to limit the amount of times you do this. At the moment I currently do a max of 2 swaps a month with my main list.  Do a lot of research into who you swap with and what they are offering. You want a product that your list is going to buy, consider working out an affiliate deal with the person you are swapping with. You can offer them the same, in most cases if their first email sells well they will sell your other products to their list or resell your main product again.

There are a few sites where you can find others to swap emails with but one that I currently use above any of the others.

This site allows you to create your own profile and open dates you wish to take on other emails. At most you should open your emails up to the public once a week or less. You do not want to over saturate your email list with ads. Consider a blend of quality information with a sale once in a while to keep your email list active and making you money.

Step #1 Before You Write

It is important to know you will not be writing the best emails right after this course. It takes time but once mastered you will do these steps without even thinking about them. Before you start writing think about what your intentions are about the email you are creating. When creating your outline there are 5 questions you need to answer.

1. Who are you?
2. What do you want?
3. Why should I care?
4. What’s in it for me?
5. What do I do now?

Step #2 Your Subject Line

When your creating your subject line you need to spark curiosity while giving away a small hint at what is inside. An example of this would be “Secret revealed that will blow your competition away!” This inclines the reader to open up the email to find out what this secret is.

Another tactic that can be used is by asking a question but to make it as general as possible within your niche. An example of this type of subject line would be “How often do you make this mistake when XXX?” XXX would be the name of your niche you are working in.

A third tactic is to make your subject line benefit oriented. An example of this would be “You can boost your income by 20% overnight” This makes readers wonder what this new tactic is and that they can put it into place and get results fast.

The forth and final tactic is a scare tactic which has been used with much success lately. An example of it would be “This is for serious marketers only!” It creates a sense of exclusivity and prompts the reader to open your email and find out more.

Step #3 Your Email Content

Now that they have opened your email you need to create value to keep the reader wanting your product . Within the first few sentences be sure to get to the point and tell the reader what this email is about.

Within the body of the email create key bullet points that make your product or service unique from others and how it will  save them time or money. As you are writing the body of your email make sure you include small key phrases to keep them wanting more such as… As a result, Let’s not forget, Why? and Guess what? This keeps your readers engaged and wanting to read more.

The most important step is your closing. Without a good closing your reader  will not click on the link and buy or sign up. You need a strong call to action here on what you want your reader to do. Do you want your reader to buy a product? Then tell them how to with further steps. Do you want your reader to spread the word of your website to their friends? Show them the affiliate program and how they can easily do so to earn a commission.

You need to give your reader a reason to act now. If you don’t the could hold off on buying your product forever! Creating a reason to take action now can be done in many ways. Offer a limited time discount on the product, limit the number you will be giving away before the price goes up.

List building 101

Building a mailing list is the core of any business and allows you to gain repeat buyers, JV partnerships, list swapping and other assets .

With online list building your goal is to collect the name and email address of the visitor to your web site. Capturing this information is the highest priority of your site.  There are two key ways of doing this. Offering exclusive content to your mailing list or offering a product or service in exchange for their information.

Since this is the core of your business the most important thing is knowing your emails are being delivered. I have tested out a number of sites which are dedicated to doing just that and found Aweber to be the best. Online Methods

1. Add an opt in form giving away a free product, service or newsletter to your blog.
2. Create a squeeze page offering a product, service or newsletter.
3. Write articles and add your squeeze page to the resource area of it.
4. Joint venture with others in your industry
5. Join give away events and offer a product for free in exchange for their information  JV Giveaways is a great site for up to date events.
6. Create a membership site offering a product
7. Add a slide in ad to your web site like seen at Visitmaniac – Manual Traffic Exchange
8. Go viral ask your subscribers to invite their  friends to your site (Create an affiliate program, ask for them to retweet a message to unlock a free gift (Tweet Riches is a great program to do this)
9. Get yourself and your business involved in web2.0 join facebook, myspace, Scribnia, Blog catalog and others.

Offline Methods

1.  Ask customers to subscribe as you ring up their order.
2. Exhibit in shows and actively solicit newsletter subscriptions.
3. Provide telephone guidelines for employees to explain how to ask for a subscription during each call.
4. Display your domain name on all printed materials with the benefits of your newsletter — on sales collateral, fliers, bags, business cards and advertising.
